Dear Laila,
Please can you post the notice below on your blog. We are living in fear of Fuel Tanker explosion in Calabar because of all this tank farms and Govt is not doing anything.
Text is below:
I live in Calabar along the 8 mile axis, I have been coming in and out of Cross River State quite frequently lately due to my new job posting to Port Harcourt.
Nigeria is a country where anything goes, evil is ignored and good is not appreciated, so it is easy for people to neglect their responsibilities and have no need to answer to anyone. In Cross River State, a lot is being ignored, taxes are high on small business owners and security is at a terrible state, case in point “the Skolombo boys”, they have been on the rampage, robbing, raping and killing people with recklessness, although the New Government has vowed to do something about them which I appreciate.
My main and major cause of concern is the fuel tanker crisis, I remember a few weeks ago when we had the nationwide scarcity that lasted over two weeks, Calabar was a scary site, travelers were constantly afraid for their lives because the number of fuel tankers parked along the highway was alarming, the lines were almost endless. I feared especially because I know the impact of fuel tanker explosion, fuel is a highly flammable spirit that can travel as fast as the speed of light and during outbreaks and the effect can be devastating, invaluable lives and properties can be lost. So its brings to me to wonder how we will manage during this our much anticipated, much talked about and highly attended Calabar Carnival because if for any reason a fire breaks out the number of lives that will be lost will be countless.
I am writing this to bring attention to the State Government and all relevant authorities to the fact the Cross River State Fire Service should be very prepared and on standby for the numerous guest that will be visiting our state, this is because my aunty had a fire outbreak in her house and even after calling the Cross River State Fire Service, they failed to show up which resulted to my aunty losing all the valuables in her home and having to start all over. This clearly shows that the state’s fire service is inactive and unable to handle any fire crisis.
There have been many incidences of tanker explosion, for example the fire explosion of last year by Eburutu barracks axis the Murtala Muhammed highway, but no one seems to be saying or doing anything about it, even the fuel tanker that crushed shops along target road in Calabar, word around is that there was no fire service truck in site on standby in case of an explosion.
The number of fuel tankers that come into this state should constantly keep the fire service on their toes and ready at any given time, so please adequate measures should be taken to avoid the calamity waiting to happen. I suggest we make hay while the sun shines to avoid unnecessary incidences. A WORD IS ENOUGH FOR THE WISE…….
Please help us in Calabar. This is an SOS Message
