British Police Smash Car Window to Rescue 'Baby', Turns Out to be a Doll

Two British police officers performed an emergency rescue after discovering what they thought was an abandoned baby on the front seat of a parked car — but things weren't quite as they seemed.

The West Midlands police officers were called to a hospital car park on Sept. 14, where they discovered the "baby" in an otherwise empty Vauxhall Corsa. After trying and failing to locate the car's owner, they smashed a rear window to gain access to the vehicle.

It was at that point that they realised what they'd rescued was actually a doll (admittedly a doll of the
nightmarishly realistic variety). The extremely life-like doll was wrapped in a kiddies blanket with only the top of its head exposed. The colouration of the head appeared discoloured giving the highly experienced officers additional cause for alarm.

Mashable reports that Dudley police Chief Inspector Phil Dolby defended his officers, saying he thought they did the right thing when faced with what they thought was a critically ill baby in a locked car.

Efforts were made to trace the owner of the car. But believing this was a genuine emergency,
they broke a window to investigate further.
"I apologise to the owner of the car who knows the reasons why my officers took the action they did. She will hopefully agree that had it have been a baby in distress and had they not acted, they would be subject of this scrutiny for all the wrong reasons."
The owner in question is Delesia Rattray, whose 10-year-old sister Janaih owns the doll. Delesia didn't exactly sound impressed when she was interviewed by BBC local radio.
"I don't think they had reason," says Rattray in the video. "If they looked properly they would have noticed it was a doll."
"I understand but it was just the fact that they said that they wasn't going to pay for it, but as soon as we contacted the papers they suddenly changed their minds."
